Spilled Cup - a nonprofit organization
Sharing the fundamental instinct to teach
For anyone who wants
- To experiment with language learners
- To experiment with various subjects
- To learn a language
- To learn various subjects
This is Spilled Cup
What is a spilled cup? Was it something in the past that brimmed over? Is it something in the present to cry over? Will it one day be an empty vessel?
Spilled Cup is an experimental space for members to help each other teach each other, in as clumsy a way as possible. Teachers who want to teach in a non-native language can gain confidence in their teaching. Students who want to learn in a non-native language can gain confidence in their learning.
Note for teachers:
You don't have to be a language teacher to teach a class. You don't even have to be a teacher. Maybe you are just someone who wants to practice giving a presentation, or someone who wants to share their passion. You can be anyone, as long as what you do helps people experience life in a different language.
Note for students:
You don't have to be a language learner to take a class. You can be a native speaker, as long as you are willing to help non-native speakers in your class.
How It Works
- Anyone can propose and teach a class — no credentials required.
- All classes are free and open to learners worldwide.
- Students help transcribe and improve each class together.
- Language learners and native speakers alike are welcome; multilingual participation is encouraged.
- Different teaching styles and teaching philosophies are welcome.
- As long as warnings are in effect, vocabulary can range from street to church, whatever you feel is educational.
Why teach?
- Share your creativity, build comaraderie and have fun
- Build confidence teaching groups
- Try out new methods and iron out kinks before adopting them in your own profession
- Get world-wide exposure if your class agrees to be recorded for the general public
- Be a leader and make a difference in people's lives
- Help people who might be otherwise marginalized
- Qualify for grants that will fund your teaching
Want to Help?
Not ready to teach yet? You can help by:
- Joining a class and writing part of the transcript
- Translating materials into your language
- Moderating discussion groups
- Helping others get started
